Hernan’s return to the Masters Series in 2010 brings with it an exciting new development. This year the ever-creative South American has slowed things down to present a distinctly cosmic disco-esque take on his inimitable sound.

“I felt it was time we took a fresh direction,” says Hernan, “But, although it was always going to be alternate, I wasn’t sure just what this direction should be. So, I locked myself away and started going through loads of music for inspiration. It wasn’t till I pitched a Henry Saiz track down (and it sounded brilliant) that I hit upon the idea of dropping everything back 15-20 BPMs on the first disc.”

Entitled ‘Day’, disc one is a beautiful, shimmering ride through Cattaneo’s audio world, its musical style the perfect antithesis of two’s club-inspired ‘Night’. But what’s all the more remarkable is how he’s also managed to work five (out of a whopping eleven) original productions, remixes and edits into the mix – no mean feat considering the unique nature of the material. “I know there’s a big debate amongst dance music fans about exclusives on compilations right now, but for me it’s a purely positive objective. Just as with the alternate style of the ‘Day’ mix, it’s another way of distinguishing the album from a live club set, a statement to the fact a lot more effort has gone into the project as whole,” he challenges. “I’ll not deny working outside of the traditional comfort zone of 125 (approx) BPM was easy, but between commissioning tracks from some of my favourite producers / friends, using or adapting my own productions and sourcing some amazing music (like the fantastic Sigur Ros track that closes the ‘Day’ mix – it’s such a great song!), I think it came together really well.”

Although ‘Night’ finds Hernan in more familiar territory, it draws upon the remaining six exclusives to ensure his fresh authorship and feel of the mix continues throughout, and comes backed by tantilising gems from likes of Way Out West, Henry Saiz, Quivver and Tone Depth, to name but a few.

Sudbeat returns with its first release for the summer 2010, and its label chief Hernan Cattaneo who is providing the goodness. Teaming up once again with longtime production partner John Tonks, the pair deliver a beautiful pairing in the aptly titled ‘July’ and ‘Fereek’.

Cattaneo & Tonks have been studio partners for six years and together have brought such stunning work as ‘Warsaw’, ‘Sirocco’ and ‘Anime’. The pair also provided one of the standout remixes on the mighty Dessous package of Phonique ft. Erlend Oeye’s ‘For The Time Being’.

Both originals here show the duo at their very best. ‘July’ is a melodic and melancholic beauty. An understated yet driving bassline is our backbone, as the sparkling key riffs, Oboe and efx challenge each other. ‘Fereek’, as the title would suggest is a dirtier, techier offering. A rolling, driving bassline is overlaid with a delicate key riff, twisted synth stabs and percussion. A dramatic build and organ-lead break down, leads us back into the killer driving groove once again.

To remix ‘July’, Hernan has drafted in one of Argentina’s brightest talents, Manuel Sofia. As Producer, Radio Show Host and Label Boss, Manuel is a very busy young man. His productions have seen their release on labels including Audiotherapy, Natura Sonoris, Sprout, Electribe and Global Underground and have found support from many of the world’s elite. His weekly radio show is now in its second year and he owns the Noizen Music record label.

Manuel’s mix of ‘July’ is a powerful mixture of melody and power. Its stripped intro belies the huge bassy synth line thats announces itself in style and works brilliantly to drive the track, backed by the beautiful oboe melody.

Lending his skills to the remix of ‘Fereek’ is UK producer Neil Quigley. Having been spotted by John Digweed and given the residency at the legendary Bedrock parties, Neil rapidly made a name for his stunning DJ sets. With releases and remixes already under his belt for Audio Therapy, Plastic City, Renaissance, Dessous and Urban Torque (A label with which he held a successful A&R position), plus a successful Renaissance mix compilation. Quigley is gaining a huge following for his band of ‘electronic house with soul.’

Neil takes ‘Fereek’ on a very different path to the original. Losing the techy edge, he takes us deep with the smooth tones of a xylophone riff. Synth stabs appear and a popping synth melody trips the track further.

You can find the track on Beatport, following THIS LINK.

Giuseppe Morabito aka Abyss , born in Naples, first turned heads with the single “Mind Games” on Ben Watt’s highly acclaimed Buzzin’ Fly Records. Although by no means his first studio output, this mystical and dark mover was a killer record and certainly caught a lot of people’s attention with everyone.

Having started out as a studio engineer in the Planet Funk studios it wasn’t long before Giuseppe was working on the groups albums. The confidence gained from this, compelled him to show off his solo work, and Abyss was born.

With a clear vision to create new and interesting music, experimenting with fresh sounds and a very high attention to detail, Abyss has spent many years developing a sound that is deeper and atmospheric while still maintaining the driving house sound we can associate with Italy.

Today’s release is a beautifully deep affair. Crisp beats are the backbone to this beautifully melodic number. Its dreamy melody will haunt our minds forever.

On the remix is label chief Hernan Cattaneo who teams up with Martin Garcia. and their revision takes the original on a dreamy electronic ride, before dropping the filthy synths in the final third.

Out on Beatport June 1st

There were only a handful of candidates to handle Renaissance’s 50th album milestone, but perhaps none more suited than Hernan Cattaneo. His previous entries into the series have established themselves as true classics, giving rise to calls, emails, even PM’s to the Renaissance office imploring us to re-secure the talents of the legendary South American.

In light of such demand, who were we to argue?

Add in the heightened anticipation of the fact it’s Hernan’s first compilation in two years and the stage is well and truly set, perfectly echoed in a recent post by one avid member of a dance message board, ‘Damn, this is a ‘must have’ compilation!’

And Hernan has clearly risen to the challenge. Working alongside various friends and producers from around the world he blurs the lines between artist album and compilation by including no less than 12 of his own originals, edits and remixes within the 29 strong, 2CD track list. “You’ve got to distinguish a compilation in this digital age,” he says, “It’s important fans and listeners feel they’re getting a unique mix, elevated beyond a standard club set. I hope this comes across with the album, it’s the product of many sleepless nights, hours in the studio and a lot of care and passion.”

Looking to the wider selection it’s clear Cattaneo hasn’t rested on his laurels as he features some of the brightest luminaries from the scene, taking in James Zabiela, Danny Howells, Guy Gerber, Timo Maas, Skylark, Guy J, Henry Saiz, plus many more, all segued by his flawless mixing style; yet another timeless addition to Hernan’s body of work and the Masters Series.

Many months in the making and the product of two decades playing the worlds most important festivals & finest dancefloors, Hernan Cattaneo’s new digital imprint Sudbeat will showcase sounds from established producers, untapped talent, South American innovators and the label boss himself.

Listen to one of Hernan’s perfectly constructed DJ sets and you will hear no emphasis on genre or style instead the focus is on musical depth and quality. The sound of Sudbeat will follow that path.

Be it the deepest grooves, the most hypnotic progressive or melodic techno, every colour of quality modern club music will be represented as Hernan strives to cast light on the many vibrant global sounds he encounters each week.

Sudbeat will be presenting releases from names like Danny Howells, Guy J, Henry Saiz & Marc Marzenit as well as Hernans own creations alongside producers like John Tonks, Martin Garcia and Soundexile.

The first release see’s the legend that is Danny Howells, deliver the fantastic ‘Moon EP’. Renowned for his extended DJ sets, Howells’s own ‘Dig Deeper’ nights have grown to become one of the most anticipated parties around. Last year he launched his own ‘Dig Deeper’ label, which has already seen release’s from Danny, backed with mix packages from some of his favourite producers.

Whilst the majority of his recent output has seen Howells tread the deeper, tech path, today’s EP features two, euphoric house epics. ‘On The Moon’ and ‘Moonage Dream’ offer our ears a breath of fresh air. Two slices of feel good, powerful, melodic and emotive house.

Also included on Hernan´s forthcoming Renaissance Masters Series compilation, Danny Howells-Moon EP will be out on beatport june 1st
